Visiting Oscar Wilde in Paris

Paris in early spring! The weather is brisk but the sun is warm. The trees and flowers are about to burst from their buds. You can feel the intense energy of life. I’m back in the groove as a flaneur. Each afternoon, I walk out the door with not a plan in my head, and then just set out in one direction or another. Yesterday, I followed the Rue de la Roquette from where it starts at the Bastille Monument to its other end. Much to my surprise, that landed me at the main entrance of Paris’s largest and most-visited cemetery, Père-Lachaise. These 44 hectares (110 acres) are the eternal resting home of hundreds of France’s most famous artists, doctors, writers, musicians, bankers, politicians, and other movers-and-shakers. Think of it as a Hollywood Walk of Fame for dead people.

Visit Now
