<p>While linguistics, the study of language, has been contemplated since the earliest human writings, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) has been developed since the earliest computers, it wasn’t until the 1990s that the “statistical revolution” in NLP took shape (Johnson, 2009). This era marked a change in NLP’s focus from symbolic or rules-based algorithms, such as grammar or syntax, to data-driven techniques that combined machine learning on more powerful computers with large corpora available via the Internet.</p>
