Inclusion Is About Valuing People As They Are, Not Trying To Make Them All The Same

When I was a child, one of my favourite toys was a plastic ball with holes of various shapes in it. Along with the ball were plastic pieces, each one of which would fit through one of the holes. It was a very basic toy to help young children to learn about shapes and practice their manual skills.

Of course, like most children I suspect, at times I would get frustrated when I could not match the shapes with the holes, and tried to force stars into squares, and circles into triangles. Occasionally this worked, by twisting and manipulating the shape to fit through a hole for which it was not designed. In some cases, they would become stuck fast part way through the hole in the process and have to be released by an exasperated parent!

Website
