My Trans Firsts Happened Secretly
<p>She wanted a beautiful daughter to take to church in lavish dresses and curled and bowed tresses. She’d sometimes dress me up as an infant and toddler girl, then cooed about my beauty. Then she hurriedly took everything off, worried my dad would discover our secret. He did once and was so angry that he punched a hole in the wall. It made me hate and fear him. He was the enemy of my inner reality.</p>
<p>I have a cousin who is outraged and convinced my mama made me trans. This cousin dismisses my sixty years of lived experience as a trans person and blames my mama for everything. My cousin has forbidden me from mentioning anything to her about this history or my transition. She said, “God made you a man. God didn’t make a mistake.” I told her, “God didn’t make a mistake; he just made me as I am.”</p>
