The Theosophical Bookshop — esotericism and spirituality in Australia

The Theosophical Society bookshop used to be located in Russell Street, Melbourne- just opposite one of the big cinemas. I found out about the Society at the end of high school when I was looking for somewhere to learn about meditation. I saw a flier somewhere, found a friend to come with me, and caught the bus to the city. As daunting as it was then, to go to a meditation class, for some reason it spooked me even more to climb that old wooden staircase to go to the bookshop. But climb I did in my own time, and if anyone could trace my footsteps in that shop over the years, they would see me gravitate first to the incense and bells, then to the books- first the Theosophical section itself, then to Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, The Dalai Lama, to spiritually-themed novels like those of Richard Bach — and on and on Buddhism, Zen, Osho, contemporary philosophy, wicca, psychology and health… I acted like a kind of divining rod searching for a spring. I never went to just one section, but dipped into each until something resonated with me.
