How many planets are there on average in a star system?

According to the same data, 697 systems are known to include more than one planet, meaning that there is slightly more than one planet on average in planetary systems. However, this does not mean that most star systems in the galaxy have only one planet, nor does it mean that there is only one planet in the discovered systems.

In reality, in systems where we have discovered only one planet, many other yet undiscovered planets may exist. Modern searching methods for exoplanets allow us to detect only relatively giant planets close to the star. It’s quite possible that there are planets far from the star or small exoplanets in the known systems that we have not yet been able to detect. In some systems, only one planet has been reliably confirmed so far, while several others are awaiting confirmation.
