Lesbians and sport in Madrid

Sport has traditionally attracted lesbian women to participate in it in Spain. In its early days, it allowed these women to openly reject some of the culturally imposed gender norms of the time by being physical and wearing attire that not traditionally feminine. It also gave lesbians, and women more generally, a change to be independent of men and to openly associate with other women. Likely for many lesbians in the early history of women’s sport, this was tremendously liberating. At the same time, all the things that made women’s sport liberating were ones that challenged society, and consequently many leading male thinkers of the day thought that being involved with sport would turn women into lesbians.[1]
