I’ll take my specialness wherever I find it

It’s always interesting to find out there is something unusual about you, something that stands out from the mass of humanity across the planet. We often learn that kind of thing early — that we’re taller than most, or can play piano by ear, or able to become invisible at will — but I only recently discovered late in life that one of my most obvious physical traits is also one of the rarest.

Like most people, I have a few genetic quirks. For example, I can wiggle my ears. My cat and dog both have complete control over their ears, so wiggling is quite routine for them, but only about 15% or so of humans can do it. Probably a vestigial trait, helping my ancestors to know where a sound was coming from.

Website
