Chapter 11: Into South Australia

My fears of any fresh food being hijacked at the border crossing prove unfounded as it turns out there is only a bin marked ‘quarantine’ on the side of the road just after the Welcome to South Australia sign. This proves one of the only positives of our arrival into SA because the weather has turned cold and rainy. It’s the start of summer in Australia. But it’s also 2023 so of course it’s expected that the weather would be wintry in the south part of the state and scorching hot in the north.

The countryside is gentle undulating farmland with a few cows and sheep standing forlornly in the rain. I’m driving now and although the road is rather rough, the view outside the big windscreen is expansive. This is one of our longer driving days and we intend to drive to Goolwa via Robe, along the coastal route. Robe turns out to be a pretty fishing/holiday village with the kind of beach houses that people used to own 40 years ago, rather than the two storey mansions you see in the in Victoria.
