Are we living in a simulation?

The concept that our realities could be a simulated creation, similar to an interactive computer simulation, was popularized by the Matrix movies. However a relatively indepth consideration of this hypothesis, and subsequent attention was orchestrated by philosopher Nick Bostrom in his 2003 paper titled “Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?”

Bostrom’s argued that If it is possible for advanced civilizations to create highly realistic simulations of their ancestors or other universes, and if these simulations are indistinguishable from “base reality” to the simulated beings within them, then it follows that the number of simulated realities would greatly outnumber the one true base reality. Therefore, the likelihood of us being in one of those simulations is higher than the probability of being in the one true reality.

It is important to note that this idea although is part of several discussions and debates, is largely speculative and not supported by concrete (scientific?) evidence. While it’s a fascinating concept that can put several of our ‘perceived realities’ to margins, there is currently no practical manner to prove or disprove the hypothesis that we are (or are not) living in a simulation. While simulation theory falls into the class of philosophical speculations that may or may not have scientific basis, it did attract many scientists who are trying to understand the fundamental laws of our universe, and our existence.
