<p>How government schools colonize Los Angeles and what we can do about it</p>
<p>For over twenty years, Anawakalmekak has honored Indigenous Peoples Day on our annual school calendar purposely dismantling Columbus Day in the lives of hundreds of LA’s indigenous school children every year. In 2017, we joined coalition-led efforts to advocate for official city and county policy in Los Angeles to follow suit. Following an effective campaign both LA city and county governments declared Indigenous Peoples Day an official holiday granting its employees and agencies the day off in honor of our ancestors’ struggles and our continued survivance.</p>
