Weed Is an Essential Piece of My HSP Self-Care Toolkit

Explaining to non-highly sensitive people what it’s like to be a highly sensitive person (HSP) is hard. I’ve tried to explain the physical experience of feeling other people’s energy in my body — it can make my chest tense, quicken my heart rate, cause a thumping in my head, and make me feel, well, icky — only to be met by a blank stare. It logically follows that if someone can’t relate to my HSP experience and how intense it is, they won’t understand how critical caring for my sensitive nervous system is to my wellbeing. Some of the things in my self-care toolkit — time alone every day, silence, taking a weed gummy most evenings after work — might seem less than 100% necessary and be met with some resistance. But I will NOT compromise on self-care. Since learning a year ago that I’m a highly sensitive person and discovering tools that help me feel SO much better every single day than I ever have before in my life, self-care has become non-negotiable. So I have to find the right language to break down that resistance from others and transform it into support.
