Leadership Self-Awareness and the Danger of the Cracked Mirror
<p>As a leadership coach and educational instructor in graduate and undergraduate business management courses, I have had to address distortions in self-awareness that have damaged the leadership capabilities of otherwise effective managers.</p>
<p>Self-awareness is the foundation for leaders to overcome self-inflicted damage. This is accomplished by examining strengths, weaknesses, values, and beliefs. By providing this “mirror” coaches can lay the groundwork for meaningful progress. Self-awareness allows individuals to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to enhance their performance. It empowers them to make conscious choices aligned with their goals, values, and aspirations, leading to more effective and fulfilling outcomes.</p>
<p>But for many who struggle with leadership effectiveness, they are working with a “cracked mirror.” By this, I mean the distortions of reality that they see lead to actions that can derail them from success.</p>
<p>In working with my clients, I have come to recognize the need to address these three most damaging misperceptions in self-awareness.</p>
