Saying Farewell To The In-laws
<p>Three months before King Charles III was born London hosted the 14th Olympiad. In consequence, if you execute an internet search for images of London in 1948 the majority of what you will find relates to that event. I visited London that year but I have no idea whether it was before or after the Olympic Games. My best guess is that it was before.</p>
<p>In fact two events marked 1948 for me: my maternal grandmother’s death and that, my first visit to London.</p>
<p>Nanny, as I called my grandmother, had, for as long as I can remember, suffered ill health. The kinds of things that still afflict people of her age today but which are easily dealt with by modern medicine:</p>
