Racial Healing: Let’s Lower the Bar

Tuesday after the federal Martin Luther King, Jr. day holiday, is recognized as The National Day of Racial Healing. Considering that just three days into the new year, we watched the death of a Black man by the actions of the LAPD, I wonder about the likelihood of racial healing.

I had to start by considering the goal of racial healing. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation established The National Day of Racial Healing and writes that “to heal is to restore to wholeness; to repair damage; and to set right.” This puts forth the idea that we have ever been whole and correct in racial equity, which is a fallacy dating back to the moment foreign feet touched American shores. Wholeness in racial equity seems like the only thing that hasn’t been “discovered” yet. Right out the gate, we’re more establishing wholeness than restoring it.
