China as I have known it–Prologue
<p>I hesitate to write this. There are thousands of China watchers, Sinologists, and Old China Hands in the world, many of them brilliant current affairs journalists, political analysts, legal experts, historians and government officials. I am not any of those.</p>
<p>There are also billions of Chinese people, all of them expert on their own culture, upbringing and country as they have known it. I am not one of them, either. There are linguists and literature experts who can illuminate us on the classical texts that China has produced in its various iterations over thousands of years. I have read a number of those texts in translation, and have what I like to call ‘taxi driver Chinese’. So why do I write this?</p>
