I Left the Peyote Ceremony Too Soon

I was the first one to leave the emu farm where about 30 of us gathered in a tipi sitting up cross-legged around the all-night fire imbibing peyote.

When the night ended I all but fled the scene. I told the host, my friend Hugo, I had to go home to meet a deadline. Little did he know it was self-imposed. The rest of the participants would eat, chat and play instruments until they decided to go their separate ways, now that the ceremony was over.

Prolonged conversation with people I did not know wasn’t on the agenda.

I’d heard edgy chattering from people who had already exited the tipi noting the emus were out and about.
