Nostalgia Unlocked: Rediscovering the Magic of Christmas at Marshall Field’s

My friend,

Lynn L. Alexander

, suggested I write about being locked in a department store. Her prompt led me on a nostalgic journey.

I chose Marshall Field & Company’s flagship store on State Street in Chicago during the Christmas holidays in the ‘50s. What a delightful evening it would be! (In 2006 it was acquired by Macy’s, but this is my story, so let’s pretend, eh?)

Image credit: David K. I had planned to go to Berghoff’s on the way back to my hotel, and the idea of chicken schnitzel with a side of spaetzle, and apple strudel for dessert, was teasing my tastebuds like a rattail comb taking on a '60s beehive. Well, that’s off the table (pun intended).
