Nordic Winter: Noma and Jul Board

The darkness of Swedish winter is all consuming. The sun rises for what feels like mere momentary glimpses at a time. And yet, the most communal solace I found in my year and a half in Sweden was in the winter months. The populous takes it upon themselves to lighten up the season. As the nights get darker suddenly a lit candle appears in the window of every home. The trees that line every street are strung up to glow as well. Restaurants of all kinds shut down and transform into centers of celebration and festivity, plus a fair bit of bacchanalia. The jul board, the Christmas table meal, becomes a feast that lasts for the entirety of December.
