THE ‘NATURE’ OF ROME

Those of us that have visited Rome and that aspire to are by and large drawn to the great grandeur of its imperial past, its cultural richness, ecclesiastical prominence, living layers of history, its period architecture and its magnificent monuments and fountains. We as humans are of course fascinated by our own cultural achievements; we unearth them and fascinate over their findings, record them in works of art, bestow them with great accolades, celebrate them in song, and capture them in arrays of photos as sightseers. In our appreciation of place, the cultural fabric does dominate our psyche; it’s obvious, it's first-hand’ and its highly interpretive; yet the narrative is lacking a ‘bigger picture’, the context of nature, the natural fabric that has evolved through millenniums of natural processes to set the stage for the human theatre! It’s our natural heritage and it’s not solely to be found and appreciated in the wild places that we designate as national parks or nature reserves; it’s rather ubiquitous and its appreciation and significance within the built form is as important.
