I Learned Something About Myself at Pride 2023 Yesterday

Yesterday morning was the parade portion of Boise Pride 2023. Every year for the past five years, we’ve attended our local Pride event. We attended our first one right after my daughter Avery came out as a lesbian, shortly before her 13th birthday.

I’ve supported the LGBTQ community for decades. However, I’d never attended a Pride event prior to my daughter coming out. Though I had dozens of online LGBTQ friends and always voted in their best interests as a liberal Democrat, I’d never checked out a Pride event in person, prior to 2018.

I’m not sure why I waited so long. These events are lit. And it’s not like you need a written invitation.

As we arrived yesterday and staked out a nice spot near the end of the route to watch the parade, I was thinking about how different this Sunday morning was from the first 21 years of my life. I’d be in church already by this time, from the mid-70s to mid-90s. Damn, how things change over time.
