My Grandpa Called Today – He Poured Wisdom That Can’t Be Realized From Books

It’s been a while since we last spoke.

I heard his voice and smiled to myself.

As we let each other know what’s currently up in our lives, I thought to myself:

“The older I become, the more I hear myself in my grandfather. He’s me in another time period. The way he talks and walks. The way he thinks and laughs.”

We continued talking for the sake of talking and he led the conversation with nuggets of wisdom.

Topic 1: Death

We were discussing the death of my stepfather.

“When’s the funeral?” He asked.

“Two days ago,” I replied, “It was a small gathering.”

He will be cremated, I explained.

To my surprise, he openly said the following:

“It’s becoming more common now isn’t it? That is the way I have chosen to go as well.”

Casually dropped that in the conversation. Like telling your buddy you’ll have to run to the store real fast. And never come back.

“This is the life of a human being. We must all go.”

He said it in an accepting tone. He is well over 80 after all.

What’s the most shocking thing about this call was how youthful he seemed.

The best influence an elder person can make is to enjoy their lives. It makes me hopeful for my own aging.

Five years ago he couldn’t hear much, he talked and thought slowly and mumbled his memories endlessly.

Visit Now
