Laying the Genetic Foundation for the Conservation of Longhorn Fairy Shrimp
<p>Researchers conducted comprehensive population-level genome sequencing on longhorn fairy shrimp collected from vernal pools across Southern California. Analysis revealed relatively high genetic diversity within and among populations considering the species’ limited range. However, there was a north-south genetic differentiation among populations.</p>
<p>Northern populations exhibited lower diversity and appeared genetically isolated from southern networks. This may reflect imprints of arid Pleistocene history when fairy shrimp were more restricted to southern coastal refugia. The connectivity among southern populations likely enabled greater genetic mixing.</p>
