We Were Once Two New Kids in High School Who Began a Lifelong Friendship

It was the first day of classes at Delta Secondary School, September 3rd, 1968. I had arrived in Canada — as a new immigrant — just six months earlier. I was starting Grade 11 and felt quite nervous and apprehensive about the year ahead. I was relatively new to the school.

I was saddled with a double course load, and I still felt “fresh-off-the-boat,” as it were. I had little confidence in my English language skills and to some degree I felt alone and unsupported. In those days the pervasive attitude towards new immigrants was… sink or swim, you are on your own.

I sat in the Science Room waiting for the Home Room teacher to welcome us back and get the year started. The kids in the room were chatting, reconnecting with classmates and sharing stories of their summer experiences.
