ORIGIN OF THE LIANGMAI NAGA TRIBE OF INDIA

In the ancient of days, according to legend, the elders of Liangmai embarked on a journey from the heartlands of China, traversing mountains and rivers to the realm known as Makhiang (the location now known as Makhel, situated within the Mao area of Senapati District), where the Nagas, once united as one, dwelt in harmony. As population pressures mounted, leading to increasing disunity, and necessitating dispersion, they ventured into new territories in various directions. This is reflected in the song of Manu Charachaung, “Makhiangluang su chalun riliet, katan kahu riliet aliu kason mai tu saosilo, kawi mai yo aleng pilo, kawimai pow maikhem kathiu maipow hunkara atu sinijiu buipong hawang bikou.” Rough translation: "In Makhiang, disunity resides, strength displayed, while the weak abides. The strong pay no heed to the meek’s plight...”.

Website
