Don’t Let Procrastination Rule Your Life

Am I the queen of procrastination? It’s not a title of pride, it’s a habit I wish to break. I’ve come to realize that procrastination is simply a lack of action — knowing what needs to be done but postponing it, often by focusing on less important things. However, this approach has no benefits. Inevitably, it leads to scrambling to complete tasks at the last minute. While this might work a few times, it eventually becomes clear that you’re falling behind in your personal life, work, school, and more, as you’re not giving your best effort. The result is a feeling that whatever you’re offering is not good enough.

So, what do you do at this point? You take action. But where do you start?

The number one thing I’ve found to be helpful is maintaining a to-do list. I know, we often have them, but sometimes we don’t stick to them. What I noticed with my to-do lists was that I wasn’t being realistic. I used to list a plethora of tasks I wanted to accomplish, only to become overwhelmed by the sheer length of the list. I changed my approach. Now, I have a weekly list and a daily list that breaks down longer-term tasks into smaller, manageable tasks to work on daily, allowing me to complete the larger task by the end of the week. Having this list also entails planning and prioritizing tasks, focusing on what’s important and urgent before tackling less urgent tasks. This helps in prioritizing the important things first and giving them the time they need to be accomplished.
