I’m Gay. I Hated Red, White & Royal Blue. But My Dying Christian Dad?

Iwatched ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ a couple weeks ago, and I hated it. Okay, that’s not fair. I disliked it. A lot. Rather, it disappointed me. See me equivocating already? I’m not afraid of expressing my opinion, despite the oodles of queer people who adored what they call a “cutting edge” rom-com. But I AM afraid. Can you guess why?

Before I tell you I understand I’m being too harsh about RWRB, let me tell you why I was looking forward to it.

As a gay man, I rue the lack of LGBTQ representation in media, across genres, and I recognize that it’s especially lacking in romance films. Tons of rom-coms get cranked out for television and movie theaters every year, but almost none are made with LGBTQ people in mind.

Sitting down to a light comedy featuring gay, bi, or trans people falling in love and living happily ever after isn’t just rare, it’s … almost unheard of and becomes controversial when it happens.
