The “Idolatry Director”

<p>Khaled Mohamad al-Asaad (January 1932&ndash;18 August 2015) was a Syrian archaeologist who dedicated over 40 years to preserving and researching the ancient city of Palmyra, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Born in Palmyra in 1932, he held a diploma in history and was educated at the University of Damascus. Al-Asaad played a pivotal role in excavations, restoration efforts, and elevating Palmyra to its UNESCO status. Fluent in Aramaic, he regularly translated texts and collaborated with various international archaeological missions. His notable achievement includes the preservation of Palmyra&rsquo;s late third-century ramparts.
