Suburban High School Athletic Director Philosophy: Build People, Not Pros.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — At 4 p.m., Marty Manning glances at his Franklin planner that details the busy weekend: the last home football game, tennis sectionals and a conference swim meet. Though most of his colleagues’ days are over, the second part of his day as an athletic director at Schaumburg High School is just starting.

“I like being busy,” Manning says with laughter.

Manning, a star of the 1996 Hoffman Estates High School boys’ basketball team who graduated with a business degree from University of Illinois, pours his passion for education and sports into his role. For eight years, Manning led the Huntley High School boys’ basketball team to school records before arriving at SHS: five regional titles and four consecutive conference championships by 2014. Manning became a business education and computer science teacher at SHS and coached basketball under the supervision of his former HEHS teacher, Principal Tim Little.
