Stop Calling Them “Human Shields”

Earlier this week, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched two attacks on the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza. The first attack, on Tuesday, allegedly killed Ibrahim Biari, one of the organizers of the October 7 terrorist attacks. The second strike, on Wednesday, allegedly killed Muhammad A’sar, the commander of Hamas’ anti-tank missile unit.

There’s no question these two men were legitimate military targets. But raining bombs on a refugee camp was bound to kill many civilians as well. Hamas puts the number of dead after both attacks at 195, but I understand many people don’t trust their numbers. Nevertheless, in this case they are probably correct. A doctor at the nearby Indonesian Hospital, Atef Al-Kahlot, said the total number of killed and wounded he saw was around 400.
