Honoring Boston’s Day

Today is the unofficial first day of spring for those living in the Boston area. Some cities are food cities, others music cities. Boston is a sports city. We take pride in the connection, the identity, the camaraderie of sport. Today’s the running of the Boston Marathon, usually the Red Sox have a home game, and it’s not at all uncommon for the Bruins and the Celtics to be in the first series of their play off runs. It’s also Patriots Day, a state holiday commemorating the first battle of the Revolutionary War. It’s our day of local pride — the day the whole city comes to life and comes together after a long winter.

On this day 10 years ago, the celebration, pride, and joy of Patriots Day was stolen from us. Instead, it was a day of horror, carnage, and sadness as two homemade bombs sent metal shards through families lining the finish line. The perpetrators would later shoot and kill an MIT security officer sitting in his car. A days long man hunt extended the terror across many suburbs of Boston.

Website
