The sick reason why companies lay off their best, high-performing employees.

We are living in extremely uncertain times, where your employer can lay you off at any time, and sometimes even without giving a reason. And if you are a high-performing employee, you’re at a higher risk!

Photo by Dan Burton on Unsplash

But why?

Companies are going through a financial crunch, a recession is looming around the corner, and employers are trying to cut as many costs as possible to survive.

I am writing this article at the moment when my organization just announced laying off 20% of their workforce. Mine is a mid-sized e-commerce SaaS company, based in Berlin, Germany.

The news was shared recently in a company-wide meeting, and it was told us that we would receive an email that would land in our inboxes within an hour. If you’re the one who’s impacted you will get an email, and if you don’t get an email, that means you are still there with us.

I’m sure every employee, for the next one hour, must have prayed not to receive any email in their inbox!

That day was not only scary but also really depressing, because as soon as the time started to pass, we started receiving messages on Slack and other contact channels, about people who were informing their colleagues about their position being impacted.

Fellow colleagues started writing farewell emails and last messages, asking others to keep in touch. Senior management was trying to be considerate and offer help. I guess, even they couldn’t do much in such difficult market situations.
