Advancements in Heart Disease Treatment (Coronary Artery Disease)

CAD is one of the most prominent heart diseases all over the globe, and a symptom of this disease can be a myocardial infarction, otherwise known as a heart attack. CAD begins to develop once a plaque that is built up of cholesterol takes over the walls of the arteries, which have the purpose of supplying blood to the heart, also known as coronary arteries. In Figure 1, it is showcased how the plaque can take over blood cells within the artery, leading to a stoppage of blood flow, which is commonly known as atherosclerosis. The region of plaque forms a blood clot, which can then alter into a rougher state. Many factors can lead to being diagnosed with CAD, such as smoking tobacco, obesity, a poor diet, and if an individual has a generational history of heart disease. There are a plethora of medical imaging techniques to analyze if an individual has CAD, an example can be an echocardiogram. An echocardiogram can measure the electrical activity within a heart.
