Current Global Plans Can Keep Temps Below 2C
<p>Scientists announced last week that, for the first time, the world is in a position to limit global warming to no more than +2° C over pre-industrial levels, according to an <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-04553-z.epdf?sharing_token=XDWxbQl49m3zoNzaj3dvAdRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0M300RSN_AgLPC24xTg-EsjBHT--C2URS0u7zmcqcM_N3XUIWvoYdyN5XmgXv0nBwudFLPbr5z5DFFO6HWxdhJBTuYtjTSsohdnGJQjb2Sr7u28hssPYst3nebtUCRjoFXyDz2J8MJnd_Ii4PWQEg92wMRv3p4WwFAXcRyJR2O-QuMyE9x6ezfcwjKLQHEy9NLJabXvraSfbRyDlwAyPNNGi1_DKHddpHp0a45BZ_r-XPhMEjxg7vCJPvIn4qivs0Gpyms1B79ZnGqL0UsZPhX4x5oYrt_2PrK6C7vSXzfRUGm2BW1nxzb8B8XiB75PVPc%3D&tracking_referrer=amp.theguardian.com" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">analysis published in <em>Nature</em></a>. This is based on net zero pledges made by nations at the UN Cop26 climate summit in December. Prior to these pledges, global temps were on pace to exceed the +2° C mark by the middle of the century.</p>
<p>The news was celebrated as a “historic milestone.”</p>
<p>I don’t want to piss on everyone’s parade, but that is like celebrating that your favorite sports team is not going to finish in last place… as long as they win the rest of their games.</p>
