Unraveling the Gender Politics of Pockets
<p>Asa professional sewer and maker, I contemplate clothing accessories more often than most people.</p>
<p>But until researching the history of pickpocketing (don’t ask!), I had no idea how much the evolution of women’s pockets paralleled the cultural and legal sexism of the times. As authors Barbara Burman and Ariane Fennetaux write, there is more to pockets than meets the eye, especially when it comes to gender equity.</p>
<p>Sure, as consumer of women’s clothing I rejoice when I can actually find a stylish dress or pair of slacks with more than a faux pocket. And, I curse the designers who even now don’t get it.</p>
