A History of the Humble Chickpea & A Video Recipe for Creamy Homemade Spicy Garlic Hummus

<p>The humble chickpea is an ancient food, and it is no wonder &mdash; it is a powerhouse of nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamin B6, manganese, folate, iron, copper, magnesium and other important nutrients. Chickpeas were found in sites dating to the late Neolithic period (circa 3500 BC). The earliest documented use&nbsp;<a href="https://beanpursuits.com/where-are-chickpeas-from/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">dates back</a>&nbsp;to the Egyptian period. The powerhouse legume is thought to originate in Mesopotamia in Southeastern Turkey, and later diversified in the Middle East, South Asia, Ethiopia and the Mediterranean (<a href="https://academic.oup.com/mbe/article/40/6/msad110/7158554" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Igolkina et al 2023</a>). It is interesting to note that the history of the chickpea and other key crops of ancient civilizations are important topics of archaeological study, as they elucidate mysteries of the ancient world about population movements, settlements, and provide a deeper understanding of ancient ways of life.
