<p>Shoun was a devoted son who always put his mother first. Though a Zen teacher, he brought her with him everywhere, even building her a house at temples so he could care for her. He did not mind the ridicule he received for letting her eat fish, knowing her needs came before rules. When she worried the laughter hurt him, she offered to become a nun herself to avoid it.</p> <p>Their bond went beyond duty, for they found joy sharing music on full-moon nights. Shoun again endured mockery for visiting a woman&rsquo;s home after she kindly hosted his harp playing.
