A Select Few To Rule?

If we were to play a word association game, and I said Ancient Athens, what comes to mind? Philosophy? The Olympics? The Parthenon? What about democracy?

Athenian democracy is often cited as the first democracy in the world. And who doesn’t like democracy? The populous has a voice. It is not an unfair assessment to guess citizens of the birthplace of democracy, Ancient Greece, would have been rather optimistic with democracy. We know at least one individual was not. The father of Greek Philosophy Socrates was rather pessimistic about the concept of democracy.

When the ancient Greeks spoke about democracy, it is not the modern understanding of democracy + republicanism, but rather direct democracy by way of pure majority rule. Athens was a city-state with a smaller population enabling a more ‘direct’ form of democracy rather than the ‘representative’ forms accorded by contemporary constitutions. In the modern context, America is a republic and not a pure democracy. La Suisse, on the other hand, is closer to direct democracy.
