Vayera — The Contradictions of Faith and Reason

I’d like to start with two quotes from famous American authors. The first is from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” The second from Walt Whitman, “Do I contradict myself? / Very well then I contradict myself, / (I am large, I contain multitudes.)”

As some of you know, I consider myself a rationalist. I like for things to make sense and to follow a rational progression. If A, then B; and so on. I believe that reason is one of our greatest tools for understanding our world. But as a rationalist, I must be reasonable and admit that reason has its limits. Life and the universe very often don’t seem to make rational sense. And despite the claims of the Greek philosophers, it’s dubious to claim that human beings are rational animals.
