Being a senior engineering leader. Skills that you can start building already

Here I would like to share experiences being a senior engineering leader and share ideas and thoughts that might be helpful for you as you think about your career and where you want to go, and what you want to do.
How can you do a better job?
How can you continuously improve?
What to do if you are interested in becoming VP of engineering, CTO, or part of the C — Staff.

Sadly I think that there’s not that much information out there. At least that I could find. As one person told me, you become a student of the job while you do the job. So how can I help others? I would like to say also that even if other people have written stories and books on the same topic, no one has your story. So I encourage you to share your stories and to write and to share your ideas and experience as we all have unique perspectives.

I would like to start by mentioning 5 patterns of dynamic reteaming from the book by Heidi Helfand “Dynamic Reteaming”. So what are the patterns of being a senior engineering leader? What are the experiences that people have in different contexts? Is there any common ground? What are the signals?
If you get free time, take that book and scroll. You might find some very interesting ideas.

From my point of view, there are 3 skills that you can build now for later.

One is learning, and I am talking about digging into this learning to work beyond engineering. It’s not just about engineering. It’s not just about the technical vision. You got to go beyond that.

Mastering translational conversations is another area.

Setting direction at different scales.

I think that a lot of this you can learn now, even before moving into a highly visible position.

Learn More
