What Exactly is Mindfulness, Anyway?

We’ve all seen the headlines encouraging us to “be mindful,” “cultivate mindfulness,” and “practice mindfulness” in various aspects of our lives, such as “mindful eating” and “mindful shopping,” “mindful breathing,” and so on. Despite these frequent mentions, the fundamental question remains: What exactly is mindfulness?

My initial encounter with mindfulness was in 2013, around the birth of my daughter. While I was in the throes of postpartum anxiety, someone introduced me to the concept as an effective means to help me cope. I was introduced to the book Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn and haven’t looked back. I’ll include a book review in another post, but this book changed my life, and if I sit and think about it, I think it was probably the first step in a long journey ahead to a career in coaching and therapy.
