<p>Amsterdam and bicycles. It’s one, if not the number one, common association with the city. But even a known thing can startle you when you see it, not just read it. The enormity of pedal power and the demographic range providing it is a shock. Sometimes multiple generations pass by stacked on one frame. But soon it becomes the visual equivalent of a city’s white noise, a quieter coursing blood in the veins than the automobile circulatory system of other places. You are aware as much as you need to be to not get run over, but the bike culture phenomenon starts to blur.</p>
<p>Amsterdam’s flatness is the great facilitator of its cycling. As someone who grew up not far from Seven Hills Road (NOT metaphorically named though the count may be exaggerated), this flatness registered with me.</p>
