Cannabis and Its Effect on Anxiety.

Cannabis has been touted as a natural treatment for anxiety. However, research has not yet shown that these products help, and some studies suggest that the new generation of higher-potency cannabis products may even worsen users’ anxiety symptoms.

A recent study published found that Canadian researchers analyzed all hospital emergency room visits recorded in Ontario between 2008 and 2019, finding that those who visited the ER for cannabis-related reasons were 3.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder within three years and 9 times more likely to require a healthcare visit for anxiety later on. These findings echo previous studies, which found that cannabis-induced anxiety rose after the state legalized weed and that nearly 20% of one hospital’s emergency room diagnoses for a two-year period involved cannabis-induced anxiety. Medical professionals warn against automatically assuming cannabis can replace other treatment modalities, as its utility is unclear.
