Stop Calling Goodwill a Resource for Disabled People

Over the weekend, I attended the Abilities Expo in Houston. This expo is a big convention with resources for disabled people ranging from adaptive sports programs to equipment vendors to ADA lawyers.

And you know who had a booth this year? Goodwill.

I don’t know who decides how the booths are given out, but to give one to Goodwill, to allow Goodwill to recruit there, is horrific and irresponsible.

Goodwill likes to tout its long history of employing disabled people, which most companies are reluctant to do. The company was founded in 1902. They took used goods, had them repaired, then resold them. The workers who made these repairs were often disabled, or as the Goodwill website says, “of little employability.”
