How You Can Get Ahead of the Curve Using AI in Digital Art Production

Six different AI programmes were used in the production of the panel above. There are many more I could use. Anyone using computers as part of their art production process should see if anything AI is helpful to you. I will go through each part of the process and the programmes used.

My first brush with AI was with Midjourney (links at the end). My particular interest was in character consistency. I wrote stories and always felt stopped when it came to illustrating my own work. If I were to write a children's book, I would need to pay an artist to illustrate it.

Midjourney held this fantastic possibility of illustrating my book for me. What became clear was that no matter how far technology advanced, I would still need artistic skill to curate, edit, and mould the AI output into a form that I could honestly describe as my own creative work. Few people would want to buy raw AI output that they could easily prompt for.

Over 12 months, I have created the young character Jack in the title image. I have invested in a drawing tablet and upped my Photoshop skills considerably. I now use Midjourney for inspiration and rendering some specific elements at the beginning of the creation process.
