Cop28 President Under Fire for Comments Defending Fossil Fuels

The president of the upcoming COP28 climate summit in Dubai, Sultan Al Jaber, has come under scrutiny for comments he made defending the ongoing use of fossil fuels.

As both the conference president and CEO of Abu Dhabi’s state-owned oil company ADNOC, Al Jaber is seen by critics as having a major conflict of interest in his role.

In remarks last month ahead of COP28, Al Jaber rejected that a gradual phasing out of fossil fuels is necessary to keep global warming below the crucial 1.5C threshold.

When questioned by former UN climate envoy Mary Robinson, who argued that COP28 must decide on phasing out fossil fuels, Al Jaber responded that there is “no scientific evidence” for such action.
