<p>Hofmann quickly realized the drug’s potential to alter conscious experience and perception radically. In subsequent experiments on himself and others, mystical-type experiences, oneness with the universe, vibrant visual hallucinations, altered sense of time and self, and rapid mood changes were commonly reported effects of taking LSD.</p>
<p>Word began to spread among psychiatrists of LSD’s seeming ability to provide insight into mental illness and treat addiction by facilitating transformative psychological experiences. Throughout the 1950s, research into therapeutic uses of LSD was conducted, with over 40,000 patients being administered the drug in an attempt to cure conditions like alcoholism, anxiety, and depression.</p>
