More Citi Ebikes Mean More Injuries

Environmentalists of New York! Stand up and cheer. The Citibike initiative implemented over a decade ago is a rousing success. Ridership goes in only one direction: Up! More and more commuters are abandoning cars, taxis, and ride shares — all of which pollute our air — in favor of biking to work. Mayor Bloomberg’s visionary program has proven to be just that — visionary. But there’s always a downside to an upside.

Initially, Citibike offered only bulky and heavy leg-powered bicycles. Humans had to be the power source of a most inefficient and laborious vehicle. Aware of that issue, greater minds than mine changed that about midway through the program’s lifespan when Citibike introduced its first pedal-assisted models. Riders no longer had to break a sweat to get where they were going, a boon to commuters who’d rather not arrive at their offices wet and fragrant. They now had to option to rent an electrified bike that would do most of the work for them.
