<p>Long ago, a young sailor was assigned his first sea duty after returning from Vietnam and being transferred out of what is now called the United States Naval Special Warfare Command (which is different from the much-more famous sub-group, the <strong>Naval Special Warfare Development Group,</strong> also called SEAL Team Six.)</p>
<p>The ship and crew of 400 or so were moored in San Francisco Bay for four days. Those times were hard; serving in the military was not highly regarded and its members were not as well-treated as they are in modern times.</p>
<p>Back then, nobody said, “Thank you for your service” or honored one’s service. People were more likely to spit on a sailor or soldier they saw and call them horrid, hurtful names, names that might stay with them for decades. Or forever.</p>
