The Anatomy of a First-Time BQ (Boston Qualifier) Marathon…

I did it!!! I finally BQ’d (Boston Qualified). After 7.5 years of marathon running and completing 21 marathons, this joyous milestone finally came last Saturday (4/1/23) at the REVEL Mt. Charleston marathon in Las Vegas, finishing in 3 hours 23 minutes and 55 seconds (wow!), 1 minute 5 seconds faster than the required threshold. That translates to 7 minutes 46 seconds per mile, or 4 minutes and 50 seconds per kilometer.

It was tough, I admit. Not just running a BQ pace for the entire length of 26.2 miles, but all the effort and preparation that leads up to that final run. Getting up to the BQ level requires tremendous dedication and persistency, lots of pain, sweat and disappointments, and even injuries (and blood!) along the way… Remaining focused on that goal and never giving up is apparently the key and once you get there, OMG what a joy and feeling of accomplishment!
